It has been an exciting year so far for our seniors. All of them were accepted to at least one of their top three schools and one student received a four year Posse Foundation Scholarship to Tulane University. We are supportive of one student’s decision to consider taking a gap year. That is what we love about this process: so many choices and ways to find the very best fit for a successful college experience!
The CSS PROFILE or “the PROFILE” is administered by the College Board and there is a fee. This application goes beyond what the FAFSA requests from a family. To find out if a school requires the PROFILE go to: profileonline.collegeboard.com

Thank you to Sari Grant for shedding some light on other communities who have been under-served in the area of college counseling (well, probably in other areas as well). One such community is the LBGT. Today I met with the Director of the youth center of the Gay and Lesbian Center in Los Angeles. We spoke about the need to help these students reach their potential and maximize their possibilities. He admitted to me that when he was a young boy he did not think he could be anything…after all, “what could I be other than gay?” Many of these students have been ostracized and rejected by their families and community. Much gratitude goes out to the men and women working everyday to make sure everyone has a fair shake.

NEVER pay for a “scholarship search company.” It is inevitably a scam! You are better off using fastweb.com or cappex.com to narrow down the best options.
If you are applying for funding — FASFA (Free Application for Student Federal Aid) — have your parent’s file their taxes as soon as possible. You don’t want to wait too long as the filing period is January 1, 2013 — please check the web site. The deadlines are “state specific” and may be later than January 1. For example, California’s deadline is March 2, 2013. Funds are limited. Be the first student on the funding list rather than the last!!!
By the way…here is the link to find out what are deadlines for filing the FAFSFA for each state: http://www.fafsa.com/fafsa-deadlines/fafsa-state-deadlines
